Greece and Turkey are at odds over a host of issues. But the latest has pushed them closer to a military confrontation.
Turkey’s signed a deal with Libya that maps out a boundary in the east of the Mediterranean Sea, but in the middle is the Greek island of Crete.
There are fears the agreement will also further complicate disputes over drilling for yet-untapped oil and gas in waters around the ethnically-divided island nation of Cyprus.
Israel and Egypt are also involved in this increasingly bitter controversy.
The maritime boundary separates what Turkey and Libya have agreed will be their Exclusive Economic Zones.
They say this gives them full rights to exploit natural resources including oil and gas.

The subject is the issue of which countries exist and how much in the East Mediterranean. Anyone looking at the map can easily see. .The mainland of Greece is a land country with a Aegean sea on one side and an Ionian Sea on the other. In addition, Greece's 3-4 islands, including the island of Crete and Rhodes, are at the exit of the Aegean Sea. There is also the island of Meis, which is a part of Greece. This island is 10 square kilometers wide; 2 kilometers from the coast of Turkey. It is 500 km from Greece. About 500 people live on it. Turkey fully in the Eastern Mediterranean, 783 562 square kilometers, 85 million people live in the area. Turkey has 1577 kilometers of coastline in the Mediterranean. The problem between the two states is this: Greece states that the islands are territorial waters and continental shelf and defends that they have the right to EEZ. Turkey has the right to territorial waters of the island. However, these are not continents. These are islands. Islands do not have a continental shelf. Therefore, he says the islands do not have the right to MEB. Greece's claim: Although the island of Kastellorizo is 10 square kilometers, the EEZ right is 40,000 square kilometers. Turkey's claim: This is nonsense. And it's illegal. An example of the application in the world: Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm and Jethou Islands, which are located in the English Channel between England and France, have been under the control of England since 1066 with a population of approximately 170,000. The problem of the continental shelf of the islands, which brought France and England against each other due to the oil deposits in the region, could only be resolved in court. In the court, Britain argued that the size of the island s does not matter, just as Greece does today, and that the sea border with France should be determined by taking this into account. France, on the other hand, stated that Britain's demand for equidistant borders based on the islands would reduce the French continental shelf in favor of Britain, and that this claim was completely disproportionate to the size of the islands and the length of their coasts. Defending that the equidistant border would divide its continental shelf into 2 separate regions, France suggested that the borders of the Channel Islands, territorial waters and the continental shelf should be determined as 6 miles, 3 miles each. Announcing its decision on June 30, 1977, the court ruled mostly in favor of France. Deciding that the line between the two sides should be drawn from the middle of the English Channel from the mainland, the court restricted the continental shelf of the Channel Islands to 12 miles. The court thus concluded that the islands would not be a continental shelf larger than 12 miles, while France was also able to maintain its continental shelf. France, despite this decision is in favor of today, Turkey 2, while Greece 582 kilometers from the island of Meis of size with a disproportionate continental shelf that Athens supports the lead time with, defending it for years to England and international courts largely accepted contradicts the theses submitted.

TO PARAPHRASE DONALD RUMSFELD: "It's a pity that God put ×Turkey's× oil under other people's land and water" TERRITORIAL WATERS: Why is Turkey describing the possibility of Greece extending its Territorial Waters in the Aegean to 12nm as "casus belli" when Turkey has already extended its TWs to 12nm in the Black Sea? EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE OF THE GREEK ISLAND GROUP OF KASTELORIZO: Turkey says that Kastelorizo is too small, too far away from the Greek mainland and too close to the Turkish mainland to have an 'EEZ' in favour of Greece... that it should in essence disclaim its Greek sovereign rights. Applying the same 'logic' to Copenhagen, one could argue that the Swedish sovereign rights of the small capital of Sweden could be disputed because it happens to be located *ON* the mainland of Denmark! Totally laughable 😂 INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE: Why does Turkey refuse to resolve its disputes with Greece in a peaceful and civilised manner at the highest authority of International Law, The Hague? Greece has been proposing this for decades

All started with Turkish government run by greed and hide personal financial scandals. Greece stand in this waters for thousands of years and repelled all intruders. I cant believe what I am hearing from these reporters. Turkey has no right over the Greek islands which have real people that Turkey eraze from the map just because is hungry for natural resources. Turkish government is rude. listen to what they say what is the reason Greece is not happy and they answer that the pipeline is the reason??? Forget the pipe line this is a distruction. The reason is Turkey came to Greek waters to steal and get the loot. Something Turks are born to do according to history. If this is not the case they would be still in Mongolia. However they went far enough. Turkey is in financial dead end, with open conflict with the curds, the egyptians the saudi arabians the cypriots the french among others the least they want is to fight a war that they dont have a chance. Dont get me wrong I understand the power of Turkey is gigantic but sometimes all it needs is a hit with a sling shot from a young determined lad. I would return to Greece to fight even if I am an immigrant in foreign country for 9 years. Come and get it Turks. All I know is that since BREXIT Turkey start to dance. Guess who is behind all this. Got you.

17:10 - Now I’m not saying this is a barefaced lie; but I do think this “expert” is intentionally hiding vital facts that bear upon the question, and otherwise playing very fast and loose with the truth. But he’s NOT lying, exactly...his brand of truth is like the pronouncement that someone is “just a bit” pregnant or dead; one can certainly appreciate distinctions in the temporal progression and magnitude of the condition, but so far as say, an obstetrician or a coroner is concerned, such modifiers still do not alter the real state of affairs.

Turkey has been in violation of every principle of international law, and wronging Greece and Cyprus for many decades. Justified as Greece is to defend it’s national sovereignty and honour against an unappeasable aggressor, the issues as presented are merely pretexts. The real causus belli lies in the nature of the Greek people themselves: we cannot long live without war and be happy; the fact that this one will be against our traditional foe is a bonus. The outcome doesn’t really matter - so long as we’re at war, the Greeks are at peace with themselves and with the world. So, President Erdogan, please, please, make the first move (Greeks like to take the moral high ground, so as to feel like we’re acting purely in self-defence - this also tends to render better military results).

You don't have to go through the whole history when the Turkish army invaded Cyprus and slaughtered and kicked out of their homes Greek-Cypriot civilians, and occupy illegally Cyprus until today, no ... no need. you have to go from the moment when they tried to unify Cyprus by legalizing the occupation the home theft and the genocide, and the bad Greek Cypriots torpedo that agreement.... @Gasman Gasssssss It is shocking that thhere are so many naive people in Turkey. That is why Erdogan can mislead a nation of 35 million 1. I never talked about ENOSIS. It suits the Greek nation to have two states at the moment (if you know the difference between a state and a nation 2. The Greek economy is admittedly weak at the moment but the Turkih lira is 10:1 against the British pound compared to 4:1 last year. This for you is an indication of Turkish economic power. Should I say that the word stupidity springs to mind or is it obvious? 3. The Grek police do not use petrol so that the Greek pilots can use it all to poke fun at your karakioz pilots. Also Greek people go to bed starving every night 4. Greece want piece, they do not want to dictate. Turkey wants to do that but they cannot. Erdogan thought he would go for by bluffing and threatening. Now he realises what he is up against. He is desperate because he cannot deliver his megalomaniacal promises and he does not want to explain it to the people because he will be exposed as the empty headed idiot he is. Because of this he is dangerous, both to us and much more to you. He threatens all around him, he presses, he gives you heroic ( but empty, meaniingless ) spee hes but he does not strike. translate from google and my opinion : Peace be upon you, my brother, with my deep respect for your channel, and with my respect for Turkey and with my respect for Egypt, but there is information in international law, and information for the international custom that is expected to be, that any island on the surface of the sea, no matter how large or small, has no sea limit to which you demand, Rather, the right is always due to the countries that formed on the coast thousands of years ago, which have the right to share the seas in proportion to its division of the text, which represent a parity between it and the opposite country, and since the Mediterranean is not of opposite countries, but rather countries sharing the sea, the issue is relative sharing, moving away From the point of the coast to the depth of the sea between neighboring and opposite countries, until they reach a fair division, according to the sea front that each country possesses, and which determines this, the engineering visions 100%, so the island of Cyprus or any Greek island, no matter how large or small, has no right In maritime sharing up to 1 mm, from the sea, but it has the right to land that it owns only as a benefit and not as sovereign, but there are only linguistic concepts that are used that we may not understand, but they support my words, when the Turks talk about the continental dimension, they intend and affirm in Uh, the relative sharing of the sea for all neighboring and opposite countries, as I explained above, and it is correct as an international law and a prevailing custom among countries, and as for what Greece or Egypt or other countries go to, it is media play, no more or less, it is not reasonable that there are people living on the island and the island This would be a counterpart to a country, in a certain historical period, to seize the sea of this state, otherwise an international war would take place, each country would liquidate and expel everyone on the islands opposite it in order to preserve its national interests, so the closest and prevailing opinion in international law and custom is appropriate and reality, It is that the islands do not own the sea but rather the land, and the countries on the land and the coast and the participation in the continent, are the ones that have the right to share the seas because they are the origin and the owner of the sovereignty as a people, this may not exist in international law and it may exist, but, if it does not exist, it is a Western colonial desire of peoples The world, and the Western countries understand this, whether they state or not, but as a preliminary study, this is correct, and international disputes may take place that deny the island’s land from possessing oil, gas and other mineral wealth rights for the island’s residents, because the land is sovereign. In order for the island to be located, it is originally owned by the state on land and to participate in the continent, but the natural right is to benefit from living rights, such as hunting and agriculture, and others, similar to any plot of land that the government gives or sells to a foreign party, which has a simple usufruct, not a sovereign right Of the riches, and if most of the western islands in the world are known and documented that they are the product of the wars that they took and confiscated from global peoples, during the First and Second World War, or during colonial time stages, then the reality and locations of these islands demonstrate the coexistence of the people of these islands with their interests and their daily life with land The main and mainland and the country that owns the continent, meaning that it is subordinate to this state, and it is considered a host or guest party, it has the right of usufruct and not the right of sovereignty, regardless of the language and customs of the islanders, the origin is the original, and it is the owner and the main component of this region or coast, by success.

This type of Ottoman “war diplomacy” is reminiscent of Hitler's behavior shortly before the start of World War II The new sultan of the peculiar "Islamic Democracy of Turkey" must do something good for his people and for human rights in his country, instead of constantly pushing his people into wars and invasions as he did with Cyprus, Iraq, Syria and Libyaa

Turkey’s current leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan creates a crisis every month with different countries as a way to fan nationalism and religious extremism at home and distract from mishandling of the economy. Last November Turkey signed a deal with the embattled government of Tripoli in Libya and laid claim to a massive swath of the Mediterranean. Turkey set itself on a collision course with Egypt, Greece and Europe over its new claims. But this is what Ankara wanted and why it continues to go forward this week with new crises on the water. How does the ‘crisis-of-the-month’ strategy work for Ankara. Every month the leadership chooses either a new invasion of Iraq, or Syria, or to push up against Greece or Egypt or Cyprus, to stir the pot. For instance on June 15 Ankara launched Operation Claw-Eagle, bombing villages across northern Iraq claiming to be “neutralizing PKK militants.” There is no evidence that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) had carried out any recent attacks. Turkey simply began bombing with F-16s and drones because it needed to keep the military doing something every month. Ever since a July 2016 coup Ankara has been using the military as much as possible to keep it fighting somewhere. For instance it invaded Syria with Operation Euphrates Shield in 2016 and 2017. Then in January 2018 it invaded peaceful Afrin, in northern Syria, causing 160,000 Kurds to flee. Afrin is now a center of human trafficking and ethnic cleansing where minorities have been forced to leave by Turkish-backed Syrian rebel extremists. After 2018 Turkey then began the invasion of northern Syria’s Tel Abyad in October 2019. Then it signed the Libya deal and began to heat up its roles in Idlib, northern Iraq, Libya and the crisis at sea. Turkey sent drones and soldiers to Libya in December 2019. In April it helped rout the forces of the Libya National Army and Egypt had to threaten to intervene in June and July to stop Turkey. Meanwhile Turkey had fought the Syrian regime in Idlib in February and March and pressured Russia toward a new deal, asking for more S-400 air defense systems. Then Turkey shifted focus to Iraq in June and then to converting the historic Hagia Sophia museum into a mosque. It then said it would “liberate Al-Aqsa” in Jerusalem, perhaps hinting at a new crisis with Israel. But before targeting Israel, Turkey sought to push its claims in the Mediterranean. This had already caused a domino effect, causing Greece, Egypt, the UAE and France to come together to condemn Turkey’s aggression. Then Greece and Egypt signed a deal on August 6. This deal cuts the Libya-Turkey water deal in half. It also comes after Israel, Cyprus and Greece signed a deal in January for a pipeline and then finalized aspects of that deal in July. Turkey is sending its navy to sea with drilling and survey ships this week to challenge these deals and put its facts on the ground. Turkey sent the Oruc Reis ship to conduct “survey activity” far in the Mediterranean between Cyprus and Crete. Turkey says it will “defend the rights” of itself and Northern Cyprus, an unrecognized country that Turkey factors into its claims at sea. Turkey’s far-right nationalist foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, who is known for tweeting that Europeans are “spoiled racist children, who should know their place” went to Beirut this over the weekend to try to push Ankara’s agenda in the wake of the explosion there and then met Azerbaijan’s foreign minister. Now he says Greece has not reciprocated Ankara’s calls for discussions. Turkey will thus send ships where it likes. European Union countries, which are afraid of Turkey because they pay Turkey billions of euros to keep refugees from coming to Europe since 2015, have nevertheless critiqued Ankara’s actions in the Mediterranean. Turkey has sent the Oruc Reis, a large seismic research vessel that looks like a floating whale to conduct “research” at sea. This is a research mission with a lot of military muscle behind it. Turkey issued a “Navtex” to warn countries where the vessel was going and then sent the Oruc Reis, two logistic vessels and three frigates, gunboats and several submarines to sea. To stoke nationalism Turkey’s media shows the box-like research boat surrounded by the pride of Turkish naval ships. It looks to some like a historic naval move, conjuring up memories of the battle of Lepanto and other naval spats with the West and Greece. Athens is livid. Greece says it won’t accept NATO’s “hands-off approach” and it wants more European countries to do something to stop the provocations. It has already had to sound alarm bells due to Turkey’s harassment of the tiny Greece island of Kastellorizo in the last months. The US State Department, despite many pro-Turkey voices like former Ambassador Jim Jeffrey present, has said it is concerned. There is a lot of naval posturing with Turkish ships sailing near Greek islands off the coast of Turkey, and Greece talking about alerts and putting naval ships to sea. Egypt also had a naval exercise. Turkey says it has new missiles for its ships. The current crisis at sea looks to be a lot of posturing that will give Ankara’s pro-government press and state media something to write about. Ankara is the largest jailer of journalists in the world so its media is entirely sympathetic to the ruling AK Party. Dissidents in Turkey are often imprisoned for years just for critiquing the government on social media, often labeled “terrorists.” There is no check on the militarist decisions in Ankara, and Ankara knows that weekly military drills or appearing to be challenging Greece, Egypt, Iraq, the PKK, EU, NATO, Syria, the US and basically everyone, makes Turkey’s leadership seem important. This comes as Turkey’s currency continues a disastrous decline and questions are raised about its handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The stories of drilling, where a research ship is sent with a massive naval escort, may be more about distracting from the economic crisis than actually fighting Greece at sea. Ankara’s track record shows that it usually uses Syrian rebels to fight for it in Libya and Syria and only conducts military campaigns against those who can’t shoot back, such as Kurds in northern Iraq, when it comes up against an Egyptian red line in Libya or Russia in Syria, it generally stops. It’s unclear where that red line may be in the Mediterranean. Ankara is trying to find out.

Small islands cant override mainland boundaries the fact is Gereece is another 800 to 1000 km away from this tiny little island which is 1 km to Turkeys mainland cant have more than 1 km EE zone therefore Greece cant dicdate Turkeys boundaries from that far. Sayying opposite would be an act of war . Greece is trying to dicdate this by the encourage of EUROPEAN UNION because Turkeys boundaries would be an obstacle for israil Egypts gas pipeline towards Italy . Also France want to be involved in this stuation even though it has no right to involve never mind commenting on it.

Dear Turks our islands have borders and no matter what propaganda your president feed you, trying to make agean sea yours is unjustified and despite the fact that i don't hate Turkish people if you try to bully your way through Agean we ll fight back. In all our history we were outnumbered and with no guns, but now we have modern military and you wont fight against unarmed civillians to throw them to the sea, iam mentally prepared to meet my end and it will be for justice because we ve been in the agean sea since ancient times while you will fight and die for your urge to grow and rule others. So as my ancestors said Μολὼν λαβέ

They are not disputed waters and how can you make a deal with a country that is still in a civil war? This is slanted. I won't even call it journalism. How much did Erdogan pay these guys to flap their rubbish? Too much value given to Islands, shouldn't have the same sovereign rights WTF are you talking about? Then I saw upper left corner the guy was speaking from out of Istanbul. Historical and journalistic sell outs like most mainstream (lack of) news outlets.

Turkey keeps provoking Western Europe. For two main reasons: 1) It's a clever plan of Erdogan to disguise the economic misery within the Turkish nation. By deliberately creating conflicts he knows people will follow him blindly into anything and will not comment Turkish politics and the system. So he stays in control and can continue his corrupt regime. 2) there's a lot of frustration over the fact that Turkey was not admitted to the EU. (Thank God for that......) Time and again Erdogan is holding the poor Syrian refugees as a means of pressure towards Europe. Comes a time we're so fed up with this guy that we'll settle things with this regime for once and for all. And the combined military power of Western Europe is much stronger than the poorly outfitted Turkish forces. As a citizen of Western Europe (I am not Greek) I've seen many Turkish warships on my trips. Trust me, they're nothing compared to what we have....... If Erdogan is wise he stops provoking and doesn't undertake any action around Kastellorizo. EU leaders already stated they will support Greece in case it's sovereignty is not respected. Erdogan is on the edge of going too far this time.

Greece is too small of a country to be hostile. I hope Greece promotes peace, even though the media tries to prepare the people for an armed conflict. I hope Turkey will do the same because so far with other countries that is not the case. What happens between Greece and Turkey doesnt happen with Greece and Italy or Egypt or Marocco. However it does happen with Turkey and Syria and Libya(not even a neighbour) for example. I believe in Turkish people, in their ancient history, their food and music since we were practically family 200 years ago. I hope we both stay peaceful because the point is to live and not kill. This report unfortunately does not promote unity among countries, that is a pity.

This idiot Erdogan is leading Turkey to international isolation, which is merely one step in his agenda to convert Turkey to an islamic state. He escalates the conflict with Greece and Cyprus, he's bombing "terrorists" in Iraq and Syria, he sends mercenaries to Libya and almost fired against the French navy in order to keep this a "secret". He started a conflict with the European Union when he tried to smuggle hundreds of thousands of immigrants through the Greek borders, where Turkish special forces were cutting through the Greek border fences in broad daylight! He even started a conflict with the United States which cost him the F-35 contract and with Russia that almost cost him the S400 missile system. Even the Americans that would let their mothers die from COVID-19 so that they don't lose profits, thought he was too crazy for these kinds of weapons. Now he converted Hagia Sophia to a mosque, which means that Turkey is no longer a secular state. I'm Greek and I'm obviously worried, but I would actually be more worried if I was a Turk, look at your neighborhood and see where fanaticism leads to. Your own military tried to overthrow this lunatic, too bad they failed. Now he'll start WW III, only this one will be the shortest one and he'll have no allies except maybe... Libya? These are my two cents as a Greek, since Al Jazeera failed at journalism yet again.

New Hitler Erdogan. Turning HagiaSofia into a mosque. Banning social media into Turkey and every voice not controlled by him. Sending to jail anyone saying anything against him Turning a secular country into an Islamic State. Jail for militaires, journalists, reporters, teachers etc. Invading Syria Invading Lybia Invading Kurdistan Supporting DAESH/ Islamic State. Supporting Muslim brotherhood. Continuous occupation of Cyprus Drilling within Cyprus' EEZ Threatening to drill into Greece's EEZ Sending refugees (made by the wars he makes into other countries) to European boarders. Make a video for people, to get informed.

@Thanos Thanos You take Greece side partially without ever considering who might be correct. Greece increased their nautical miles to 10 from 6 in 1939 breaking the Lausanne Treaty. Greece militarise Cyprus with their own soldiers & weapons in until 1974 breaking the Zürich and London Agreement. Greece invaded Izmir in 1919 illegally, before leaving they burned most of villages, killed many women & children. Greek orthodoxy destroyed all Ethnic minorities in Crete by 1908. Greece thinking militarising the islands close to Turkey breaking the Lausanne treaty and still illegally occupying the 12 islands under 1946 Paris Peace agreement because Turkey was not present at the agreement. Now in 2020 they want all of Aegean to themselves ignoring all the EEZ rights of the mainland. Ambitions of Greece is clear: they want to bring back Hellen times. Because nothing good happened to them since then. This is same dream as Adolf Hitler thought of bringing back the Reich Empire!

Al Jazeera is the mouthpiece of Qatar. A state with very warm relations with Turkey. A state that assisted Turkey during its currency crisis in 2018 to the tune of $15B. A state that is in conflict with Saudi Arabia and the UAE-- countries that are also in competition with Turkey. Do not expect objective reporting from Al Jazeera. That is the reason there was no Greek representation.
