Hey guys! This week was INSANE up here at Cerro Gordo. We brought the largest water tank to ever be up here to town thanks to the help of Heavy D Sparks and Diesel Dave and crew! 40,000 gallon tank measuring over 47 ft long and 13 ft around. This will provide the water for the American Hotel sprinkler system. A HUGE day in Cerro Gordo's history...but it's not done yet. There is some updated news at the very end, so make sure you stick around for that.

Damn Brent, the extreme highs and lows of this project are something to behold. It seems to me that the crazy unpredictable stuff is in the very fabric of the town from the beginning and that legacy is just continuing. Such a testament to the whole team's hard work and perseverance that despite all the challenges, the American Hotel will be rebuilt, and more.

I was thoroughly STOKED for 26min 20sec- so happy to see everything that went into so epic an accomplishment. I did not see that last minute coming. Seeing the road like that, totally unrecognizable from the few times I've driven it and realizing how it'll affect things, is crushing. I'm so sorry. @Thom Walbran Yeah, I didn't realize it was a "1/1000 year event." (I think that's a bit of an exaggeration, but still...) There is an issue though with the fact that their livelihoods depend on the "business" being open, as well as needing safe access to and from the area for food and materials. That should take precedence over access to tourist traps and state-run parks, since nobodies livelihood depends on it

As a former Army HEMTT driver from 33 years ago, I am very impressed. These trucks have always been top heavy to begin with and you all did not use some sort of counter ballast system once the tank being hoisted on top. High probably odds for rollover but you got the job done.

Loved that you got the tank up the road so well Dave and his crew rose to the challenge once again and managed to get it all sorted before the flash flood, so sorry to hear about the road damage sounds like another job for Dave and the crew to assist you with some equipment to get that road repaired and maybe knowing Dave improvements made along the way so it makes the pass up to the town safer and easier for the water tanks and anything else that’s needed in the future. Hey Brent, this is awesome! So so happy to see that this major step in the rebuilding of the hotel has happened. This must have been the weekend after the metal detecting event. My wife and I were there, not sure if you remember us, we were camped at the miners cabin that had that beautiful deck that we were able to use for our cookware. I had hoped to be able to come up with my cousin later this month but it doesnt look possible based on the road condition. I will be in the area so I will call anyway. Very happy to see this, Cerro Gordo has the ability to drag you into its existence. It only strengthens my love for the Owens Valley and the Eastern Corridor. My prayers are with you, wish I could help. Peace brother

One thing you can do with a firewater tank that has a specific code volume requirement is use the higher level as a buffer for everyday water use. The take off would need to be above the level for the required volume. That allows you to have some circulation in the big tank so it’s not stagnant.
Kevin Crosby
Kevin Crosby Πριν 28 ημέρες
@OneWorld Yep. Pressure is based on the water LEVEL, not the quantity. For a given drop, the pressure will be the same. A 10 foot drop is a 10 foot drop. Doesn't matter if that 10 foot is a bucket on a ladder or a pipe 10 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, the pressure will be the same. Personally, if I am going to have a leak or lose a seam in a tank, I'd prefer to close a valve to isolate the bad tank and still have the other three for use, than to have one huge tank and lose every drop I had.
OneWorld
OneWorld Πριν 29 ημέρες
This seemed like a fun monumental task to take that huge tank out there, but from an economical perspective I wonder if it would had been easier to take 4 small tanks up there and then just join the discharge pipes into one. It should have the same pressure.
Kevin Crosby
Kevin Crosby Πριν μήνα
@David Messersmith what comes out of your faucets most likely got there in uncoated iron or steel pipes unless you live in a very young community. In any case, that particular tank would be easy to have coated...at least it isn't perched up on top of a tower with the city name painted across it.
David Messersmith
David Messersmith Πριν μήνα
@Bryan Vollmer even just for firewater, you would need a coating on carbon steel. In any case the water would need extra treatment for potable water as compared to utility water.
Bryan Vollmer

The tank being carbon steel I don’t think it will work. Will have to be fiberglass tank for potable.

25:20 "I'm still waiting for something to drop still. Everything's just gone so smooth. I can't believe it." For the nightmare the flood damage seems to have caused, having gotten the tank in place at all makes the rest meaningless. Even a minor delivery delay of hours would have set everything back a day. Had that tank got caught mid-way up the hill when the rain's hit, THAT would truly have been the end of it.

@numerum bestia it is better to BURN OUT then to FADE AWAY! In the 60's my family took summer vacations every year. Mon and Dad front seat, my baby sister laying on the back of the front seat between them my two older brothers one laying across the back seat the other across the floor board. That left me, reached out across the back window area, for 6 years 63-68 we owned Mercury Breezeway . in case you are unaware this model rear window lowered, I sometimes had full access to a great truck area at 60 mph. FYI NOT 1 of the 6 had on seat belts, not even sure the rear seat any at all. I last note in the late 80s I visited my oldest sister who worked for Bethlaham Steel in PA, her job was to attach a probe to the bottom of a huge [4-5 story tall] Iron Bucket of boiling, bubbling molten steel to get a reading at least 4-5 times a day. I was allowed to watch one day and NO FREAKING WAY! Thank God she got transferred to drive those dump trunks the size of an office building.

@LordDragox412 Those guys that fly through the valleys of mountains in wing-suits have a 1 in 500 chance of death every time they do it. 400+ fatalities have happened since the birth of the sport. I bet those same men didn’t take unnecessary risks when at work because when they died, they wanted to do it on their own terms while also doing something they love. I can understand that. Safety standards are written in blood, a lot of people have been crushed while walking under tanks and stuff like this which is why you’ll be thrown off a job-site if you do it while at work.

@LordDragox412 There’s nothing wrong with him buying Cerro Gordo. I’ve enjoyed watching his progress so far. I guess I just don’t want to hear about him getting mutilated or killed in front of all his friends because of a lack of experience or because he was excited and rushed something. I don’t think we should all live boring, risk free lives. After all the things I’ve done it’s a miracle that I’m still alive. I just think mistakes like walking under that tank are different. It’s like driving without a seatbelt or looking down the barrel of a loaded gun. Those things aren’t exactly an adrenaline rush, they are just unnecessary risks. I understand that it’s probably not any more dangerous than him tearing around on his dirt-bike but at least that’s a fun way to go, in comparison to being crushed.

Have you thought about adding a system that captures water from the air? It might be worth looking into depending on the humidity up there, and your water needs.

My heart sank when I heard that road to Cerro Gordo was closed. I feared for the worst possible scenario, but I’m sure you will figure something out. At least the tank made it and Dave and his crew were off the mountain in perfect time! Baby steps, but you’re making it happen! Proud of you and everyone who has helped make this and many other things happen!

@Peter Canada Unfortunately, billing will continue on the equipment until it is returned. I've seen equipment rental outfits charge for the interval between when you called them to pick it up and when they finally get around to showing up with the truck to retrieve it, on the premise that you COULD have used it during that time.

It's growth and future success is 100% a testimate of your determination, persistence, creativity and hope. I really think anyone else would have given up. Which is why we all know this washed out road won't be the last challenge this town will overcome. ❤️

After seeing the news about the 1000 year flood in death valley, it occurred to me to check up on how it affected you. It's simply amazing that you got the tank up the hill less than 50 hours before the heavens opened! When I saw that wall of rain early on, I was super worried, but thankfully it held off.

@Doug Yeager Flute Music That's the power of lobbying for you - even something as basic as capturing rain water was made illegal, but only for regular people. Nestle can drain the groundwater as much as it wants and capture as much as it wants, for the low low price of a few cents per literal fuckton of water and a couple hundred millions spent on lobbying, which is just a business expense that gave returns very shortly after the politician pockets were stuffed.

Wow, what an undertaking... glad you go the tank up there. Too bad about the road, I hope the county makes it a priority, considering all the radio repeaters up there (that maybe run on diesel or propane). I think a water catchment would be a good idea for water capture for when it does rain / snow

Such a positive video, but so gutted about the road at the end. As many have said, things will get fixed, maybe even end up with better access as a result? Going to hop over to the store now to get me some merch and show my support. I hope things are starting to look up after a week, Brent.

I think that the greatest thing about this channel, and all it's videos, is that it is probably the most complete archive of such a thing in existence. This point in Cerro Gordo's history, it's restoration, is video documented on essentially a month to month basis. It has been extremely entertaining to watch and see it progress in the two years I've been watching. Probably one of the best recommendations youtube has ever given me.

It's so impressive how fast things can move along when you remove all the bureaucracy and bullshit. Anywhere else, handled by the "correct and proper" authorities, and that would have taken a week or more. Also, ever thought about hosting a rally stage or hill climb event on that 7 mile hill? Looks fantastic fun.

After watching Heavy D's video, where everything went so smoothly, the flood was a total shock. I'm sure you guys will overcome this latest setback but it's an inconvenience and an expense that you didn't need. What a good job Dave + Co left you the big digger; that will help so much. Good luck with it. Just a thought but ....... weird how it was water that did the damage, despite always being in short supply. Pity you couldn't harness all that floodwater.
