It's probably fake because RBMK reactor cores don't explode

Looked like six frames, the reactor lid being popped out. Six very terrifying frames.

0:59 Actually no, it is not because it is cheaper. They put that in HBO's version to avoid adding a physics lesson to explain the actual reason. Basically, the graphite "tips" weren't tips. The controll rods have two sections which are almost as long as the reactor core. The graphite section makes up the lower section of the rods and are left in the core when they want to increase power. This is because the graphite displaces water and speeds up the reaction. When they pressed AZ-5, the rods moved down so the boron section would be in the core and slow down the reaction. But this lead to the water at the very bottom of the core being displaced and the reaction sped up. The way to avoid this is to have individual graphite and boron rods. So it is in some ways to save money.

Over 33,000 Mega-Watts. Could someone put that into perspective, how much power is that?
IZEASGT Πριν 2 μήνες
Wikipedia says the average electrical power consumption of Norway in 1998 was around 12,700 megawatts. So... a lot.
Purpled Πριν 3 μήνες
33,000 megawatts is in the ballpark of 44million horsepower, (more or less) now imagine 1 single truck engine that generates 44 million horsepower, but fueled off of radioactive elements

It's odd how they show the lid blasting off at the speed of a bullet and at somewhat of an angle...yet it somehow landed back in the reactor pit? Crazy.

This show demonstrates the danger of allowing politics to govern media outlets. The series Chernobyl rewrites history with a liberal agenda. In particular is the dominant role women play throughout the show that is completely inconsistent with the era. I’m not saying that women incapable of performing as they do in the show, I’m saying that they absolutely and unequivocally did not perform that way at the time. HBO is trying to rewrite history, and we can only hope that they have better intentions than the Nazis or Soviets did when they rewrote history for political gain. It’s dangerous.

Death. The core is an anoxic environment. Once the top was breached...atmospheric oxygen had access to superheated carbon in the form of the graphite. Instant oxidation and conversion to CO2 = KA-FUCKING-BOOM. and it literally just happened again: www.cnn.com/2019/08/08/europe/russia-deadly-incident-radiation/index.html

If there was a containment building, the second explosion can be avoided. The scale of the disaster would be more manageable.

I get how uranium-235 is radioactive with the neutrons (bullets) flying off it. But what I don't get is how a stable element like graphite becomes radioactive. Is it because it's covered with uranium-235 dust? Or does it absorb neutrons and reemit them? I doubt too many nuclear physicists scroll through ELvids comments, but maybe I'll get lucky.
terminator10150 Πριν 3 μήνες
The neutrons will either react with the graphite directly converting stable C12 and C13 into unstable C14 radioisotopes or react with impurities in the graphite such as nitrogen, again converting them into radioactive carbon.
