Why bother using lead and oakum when sealing cast iron pipes.. use tar and shove it in there.. its cheaper. Why install pressure relief valves on communal firewood boilers.. it will not explode, its impossible, communist made boilers are hard as platinum.. its cheaper. Why use copper wires in buildings? What a joke, use aluminum.. its cheaper. Why use 50 percent cement in main supporting structures in 20 stories flat blocks.. use 30 percent, it will be fine.. its cheaper. Why install fire retardants in structures where fire risk is always present.. it will never happen.. its cheaper. Why should we build our reactors safely? Its so stupid, lets do it this way.. its cheaper. Why give a real good forma education to people who will run the unsafe reactor.. don't amuse me, its so stupid, they will learn it all in the job.. its cheaper. Why use properly made surgical machinery? it will be fine, who cares if a few people die from faulty machinery.. its cheaper. Why should we use rodent protection in food factory machinery? Mice and rats aren't poisonous, who cares if some rats get blended into sausage.. its cheaper. Why bother using good quality components in everyday devices.. it will be fine,.. its cheaper. Why should our vehicles be made with precision? Don't joke around Vadim, car is a car, it will run no matter how its made.. it's cheaper...... USSR in a nutshell

I'm reminded of a cult classic" KRULL" LYSETTE ANTHONY'S British accent was replaced with an American overdub. PATHETIC. I would have preferred hearing Lisette Anthony's original voice. Again I have to emphasize I don't care if you're an American, or British, or whatever after you are if you cannot positively, and accurately, affect an accent of another country or ethnicity oh, you need to step the hell back and make room for someone who can Chernobyl sucks because it has a bunch of British actors with British accents, if they were British actors with Russian accents this wouldn't be an issue. I can cite you Time After Time and actor and actress after actor and actress who are able to affect other ethnicities and other accents in order to accurately portray the character. Chernobyl sucks because you didn't at least attempt, to effect a Russian accent. The movie crawl sucks because they took it was set Anthony's original voice out and dubbed in some American substitute. Chernobyl sucks because none of the actors attempted to properly execute a Russian accent. They didn't even try. HBO is world-wide has nothing to do with a British slant, or sensibility on this issue. It's a worldwide issue and they should have at least did their best yeah they're going to speak English yes, to make him sound like Russians speaking English. Damn.

@KK Hagerty no, you are wrong, Christian Christian Bale was able to adopt an American accent in order to play Batman, Tom Holland was able to adopt an American accent in order to play Spider-Man, Hugh Laurie was able to effect an American accent in order to play house m.d., and I can't remember his name off the top of my head but he was in and is the main character from The Walking Dead believe his last name is Lincoln. He was able to effect an American accent even though he was British. So. You are wrong. If you're playing a Russian character you should have a Russian accent oh, if you don't, hire a voice coach and they'll teach you how to do that. Chernobyl sucks because that has a bunch of Scottish and British accent added actors who failed miserably to adopt a Russian accent. There are plenty of British accents and pretty of plenty of British actors to portray British characters. If you're PLAYING a Russian character, AR LEAST HAVE A RUSSIAN ACCENT! DUH , BLISTERING IDIOT!

What I love about episodes 1 through 5 is the fact that none of these British actors seem to be able to even fake a Russian accent it's so goddamn pathetic that it baffles the imagination. It's kind of like when Kevin Costner played Robin Hood with his corn-fed Iowa accident and couldn't even attempt a British accent. Why is it that the actors speak with a British accent when they should be speaking with at least a Russian accent if they're in English. It's so pathetic and it's so goddamn disgusting, I'm Amazed nobody seemed to be able to figure that out add HBO? You're that goddamn stupid you couldn't tell them at least attempt to Russian accent instead of a British accent. Wow how blisteringly stupid.

Positive void coefficient was a disaster waiting to happen. If steam emerges in each channel instead of water, the neighboring rods begin to accelerate each other without the water barrier balancing the reaction.

03:03 - This slow mo scene depicts the shattered remains of one of the graphite tips referred to earlier, floating past. Very mindful detail by the visual effects team, as these lower parts were found scattered over the affected area. 03:11 - The beam of ionized air directly above the core post-explosion was another nice visual touch.

0:59 Actually no, it is not because it is cheaper. They put that in HBO's version to avoid adding a physics lesson to explain the actual reason. Basically, the graphite "tips" weren't tips. The controll rods have two sections which are almost as long as the reactor core. The graphite section makes up the lower section of the rods and are left in the core when they want to increase power. This is because the graphite displaces water and speeds up the reaction. When they pressed AZ-5, the rods moved down so the boron section would be in the core and slow down the reaction. But this lead to the water at the very bottom of the core being displaced and the reaction sped up. The way to avoid this is to have individual graphite and boron rods. So it is in some ways to save money.

This show demonstrates the danger of allowing politics to govern media outlets. The series Chernobyl rewrites history with a liberal agenda. In particular is the dominant role women play throughout the show that is completely inconsistent with the era. I’m not saying that women incapable of performing as they do in the show, I’m saying that they absolutely and unequivocally did not perform that way at the time. HBO is trying to rewrite history, and we can only hope that they have better intentions than the Nazis or Soviets did when they rewrote history for political gain. It’s dangerous.

I get how uranium-235 is radioactive with the neutrons (bullets) flying off it. But what I don't get is how a stable element like graphite becomes radioactive. Is it because it's covered with uranium-235 dust? Or does it absorb neutrons and reemit them? I doubt too many nuclear physicists scroll through ELvids comments, but maybe I'll get lucky.

The neutrons will either react with the graphite directly converting stable C12 and C13 into unstable C14 radioisotopes or react with impurities in the graphite such as nitrogen, again converting them into radioactive carbon.

Who came up with this crap. Qualifying it as close to a 5 megaton thermonuclear device. It was not even close to a 1 kiloton device. There is no possible scenario in which you get a thermonuclear detonation from a nuclear power plant meltdown. It just does not work like that. And if your watching it and believing that. Then you need a few more classes on physics.

Equus Pallidus uh. That’s the thing. It wasn’t a meltdown. It was a full on explosion. I get that it’s not entirely accurate but it was a really big point in the series that this type of reactor “could not explode.”

Xenon poisoning of the core was absorbing to many neutrons as the power level dropped. Xenon usually burns away at normal operating temps, but during the low power test it built up and dropped the cores power levels much further then they wanted it to go. In response they removed more and more control rods to counteract this. This brought the power back up. When cooling water was increased to the reactor, as per procedure of the test and water being a neutron absorber, the reactors power fell again. So the crew responded by lowering the pressure of the cooling water, turning off several pumps. With the waters pressure down, voids, steam pockets, started forming in the core. Steam doesn't absorb neutrons as well as water. So the neutrons flew through the steam, hit the other control rod, sped up the reaction and caused more heat, more steam, more voids, more reactivity. The positive void coefficient is born, and the reactor beings to dangerously power up. The control rods were designed to have the absorber on top and the moderator on the bottom, so that when you pull out the absorber, it pulls in the moderator. By pulling these fully out, water was left in the channels, which was forming voids. So when the emergency shutdown was hit, the graphite moderator tips, HAD to go back in first to a dangerously unstable reactor.... so the power spiked, the rods got stuck, and the steam explosion happened that dislodged the reactors 2 million pound upper shield. Once air got in and mixed with hydrogen and superheated graphite..... boom. The remains of the core melted down and we have Chernobyl. ( I had to simplify this a bit. The amount of crazy that happened that day can make your brain hurt. If I made some mistakes by all means correct me. ) ^^

As I understand it, control rods stop the nuclear reaction taking place and had been lowered to bring down the power level to carry out the Safety test. The power level got too low to perform the test within the designated parameters, so control rods were withdrawn to get the power back up. The rbmk reactor had a flaw that made it dangerously unstable under these conditions causing a power spike, so the rods were reinserted with the catastrophic results we now know.
