Always nice to drop in on John Oliver when I get too optimistic about life.
Jig Up

Ahh, I’m rather pessimistic about life, but John Oliver doesn’t (usually) make me feel more pessimistic- generally speaking, I end up about equally pessimistic, but more at peace with the pessimism, if that makes sense. Less “the world is awful” and more “the world is awful, but at least there are those who care,” along with a small, tiny little candle of hope being lit, hope that there may yet be change- the understanding, granted, that it likely won’t change, and may indeed get worse, is there too, but that hope that, at least in the long term, it may improve, is nonetheless present. Sorry for the rambling sentence structure; I’ve a tendency to try and stuff far too many clauses and phrases into single sentences.

That young lady with NF1 has been such an amazing ally and even though she was thrust into the public eye against her will and forced to reveal to everyone her private medical information, she's been strong throughout. I have lupus and get looks when I'm flaring up with contagious looking "rashes/lesions" on my face and body. I've heard people whisper comments and it hurts. I cannot image having someone publicly and ignorantly pointing out my lesions on social media. I hope good things come from this -like awareness about NF1 and that not everyone's skin is perfect. Maybe a big brand can give her a lotion commercial to promote the fact that not everyone's skin looks like an airbrushed photoshoot. She deserves good things to happen to her. I'm happy John Oliver is helping to get the truth out there to his massive audience. And I hope the cowardly douchebag that tried to embarrass her on TikTok is going through hell right now as karma.

"If we had an outbreak associated with bowling, would we not warn people to stop bowling?" Ironically 2 years ago we warned people not to go out and wear masks because of Covid, and look at the reactions. Based on the above analogy, people would only want to go bowling even more because it's their "freedom" to go bowling
Corvus Strigiform
Corvus Strigiform Πριν 22 ημέρες
@September Amyx Since you clearly haven't "checked the science" I don't anticipate that you will actually read further, but an analogy for covid and masks could be described as such: If you spit on me and neither of us wears a mask, I've covered in spit. If I wear a mask and you don't, I still have spit on me. If you wear a mask, most or all of it stays in your mask. If we both wear masks, that is the best level of protection. So, yes, me wearing a mask protects me somewhat, but it protects others from me even more. "Check the science." Or don't. Like you clearly have not up until this point.
September Amyx
September Amyx Πριν 27 ημέρες
@Corvus Strigiform Masks are worn to protect yourself, period. Check the science.
Corvus Strigiform
Corvus Strigiform Πριν 28 ημέρες
@September Amyx I am aware of how masks work, are you? Masks primary function is protecting other people from the WEARER of the mask in terms of covid and many other respiratory pathogens. An N95 has pretty good protection for the wearer as well, but masking works best when everyone wears them, especially people who are sick or who have been knowingly exposed. And if it's still not clear, I still wear a mask to protect myself but also because I actually care about protecting other people, too. Imagine what the past few years would have looked like if everyone just acted like they gave a sht about others.
September Amyx
September Amyx Πριν 28 ημέρες
@Corvus Strigiform You are responsible for yourself. So if you are afraid of catching something, knock yourself out by wearing the correct mask for the infection, and wearing it correctly. Not hanging from your top lip., not by buying a cheap mask that doesn't filter correctly for the pathogen. Nuff said.
Corvus Strigiform
Corvus Strigiform Πριν 28 ημέρες
Not the greatest analogy though since not wearing masks violates the safety of others who cannot consent whereas close contact like sex involves more consent and communication between people who can assess risk together. Their behavior does not put people outside their group at the same kind of risk that literally breathing next to someone in the store does with COVID. Complicated stuff.

How ironic. I don't think you know the *meaning* of the word "ableist," given that you used an _ableist_ word - "insanely"_ immediately preceding it. The ableist words _"insane," "crazy," "nuts,"_ and _"mental"_ are *outdated stereotypes* that have been used more recently and excessively to describe any everyday thing, like an *annoyance* (line-up at a cashier or gas station), something *enjoyable* (a meal, concert, a trip), something *remarkable* or *unusual,* or someone who's slightly more gregarious, subdued or quirky. Unfortunately, the *_stigma_* around those living with the challenges of a mental health diagnosis *still exists,* and using ableist lauguage exacerbates it, whether its about mental health or any other thing - so much so, that those *in need of professional psychiatric support* may *not get it,* for fear of being unfairly labeled, regardless of how one "didn't mean it _that_ way." So, please, use your sense of compassion, consideration and range of *vocabulary* to express yourself _without_ using *ableist* language. People with mental health issues - or intellectual or developmental challenges - are already *marginalized* and deserve respect, not thoughtless, disparaging comments in forums like this, or in everyday conversations, directly or indirectly.

Faxes are used absurdly often in the healthcare system. Sometimes it's the most efficient option we can use. Granted, not the most efficient option in existence, just the most efficient one that's been given the okay by The Powers That Be. I was once told that faxes are used instead of email in some cases because it's supposedly more secure, in that a fax system "can't be hacked like email". But the fax number can be mistyped when sending it. Which can result in fantastically secure results, such as a medical document ending up being sent to a car dealership rather than a medical center.

Honestly, the pandemic is a bit of a head scratcher. I've been hearing for decades now a pandemic is due from the scientific community, and hearing how easily spread by fast travel even before symptoms it is from them.. and hence, the way things work, it is bound to happen unless precautions taken. And for decades they apparently ignored all warnings. Not to mention, I thought all states had emergency agencies who were supposed to prepare to deal with emergencies. What are they getting funding for? I know some have weather emergencies and such. But you also have to prepare for other stuff. But I suppose every time some weather stuff happens that mess was an indicator of how badly prepared they are for anything apparently. The denial and time gaps just make them worse. With my limited scientific knowledge and awareness of pandemic history from a documentary type series (I actually watched the black plague one right before the pandemic and it was made a couple years before that I think) as well as my common sense and knowledge of people.. I feel I'm better qualified than those in charge to make decisions. And that's scary because I haven't had the education or experience in the profession and yet.. smh. I could and did know everything of how it would happen once it had that delayed response and I saw the way they did things. So ridiculous. And who would have thought not educating people properly and consistently no matter their income or what neighborhood they resided in, nor the overall lack of health orientated mindset along with the work no matter what, paycheck to paycheck dependency would affect things and hurt society in the long run? Not I.. oh, wait, yes, I. Smh. The USA is a perfect storm of perfect stupidity on things that could run smoothly and be fixed. History will always repeats itself because people aren't largely taught it and what it means. They also overestimate their abilities as well. The whole situation screamed to me Masque of the red death. They, the rich, don't care as they party unaware they have servants or anyone who eventually will bring it to them. It is in everyone's best interest, health care. Smh.

Fun fact: Prairie Dogs have one of the most complicated systems of communication in the world, being able to remember individual people and consistently describe them to other Prairie Dogs in their group using features such as size; clothing, skin and hair color; and gender. There’s a large linguistics project exploring their communicative abilities, and some linguists argue that their “language” is the closest in nature to that of humans. They even have geosocial dialects.

Additionally, there is a group of prairie dogs in Canada who have been shown to hibernate, they are sadly at risk, and a keystone prairie species. They form complex social networks and have family units despite being facultative hibernators (many folks thought this would be impossible). Some ranchers consider them pests because their burrows can hurt cattle so there has been some land use headbutting. Endangered/at-risk owls will also use their old burrows. Unfortunately, these little guys are very vulnerable to human transmissible species including bubonic plague. Source: My SO was one of the Canadian researchers who studied them. Additional fun fact, studying animals that hibernate has had tremendous impacts on human medicine since they avoid certain types of cold damage, ischemia, and muscle atrophy.

John's point at 11:56 is pretty spot on in my opinion. The world is more interconnected than ever before, with advancements in the travel of both goods and people (aircraft alone, given that airplanes have only been around for little more than a century). Therefore, the likelihood of a virus or bacteria of some kind making its way from one part of the world to other parts of the world is pretty darn good, and if nations with vaccines have large stockpiles to counter those viral/bacterial threats, then they should be willing to share those stockpiles with less fortunate nations going through severe outbreaks. Because sooner or later, those outbreaks will probably make their way to those countries which were hesitant or reluctant to help in the first place and nip the problem in the bud when it was more manageable. And it wouldn't even necessarily be out of altruism or goodwill, but simple self-interest in order to keep the disease from spreading outward and becoming a potential worldwide epidemic. End of rant.

@Melange So, what did the improvements in the medical field lead to? Ahh, yes, about 5 billion more people chewing up resources and causing widespread damage than the planet can sustain. Nothing against improvements in the medical field, if they had come with some kind of global population control. As they are they will cause suffering down the road. As usual, a human kicking the can down the road solution.
Melange
Melange Πριν 27 ημέρες
@Uwe Schroeder I actually already wrote several in my response to you earlier today. If you can't see how the gains in the medical field have lead to major improvements in how we tackle diseases and reduction in human suffering from said diseases but have only lead to things getting worse you ignore the views of billions of people; leading to a more nuanced perspective. Your choice to cut yourself away from those perspectives doesn't only makes your world view poorer if the result is basically "there's been no improvements the last centuries and people are only out for profit". People are never as black and white as you portrait. Some individuals may be, but humanity on a whole? No way, open your eyes and see that people are a little bit more complex.
Uwe Schroeder
Uwe Schroeder Πριν 27 ημέρες
@Melange there isn't much nuance to be had. I see you couldn't come up with any major advancement that is actually good for people and planet in the long run either. Humans just don't think like that. We think short sighted in the now. We don't think about others nor the environment we live in and definitely not in the long term or about the repercussions of our actions.

That the vaccines were not given before expiration isn't necessarily because of some "resistance" to help others, the SARS2 vaccines were given sort of on time to other countries, including mine. Often things are just more simple when abstracted from all the real world factors, bureaucratic and logistic. And people in charge are also not necessarily as capable as they'd want to be. I'm not sure "selfishness" plays a significant role in sabotaging such efforts, at least not most of the time. There's even some saying along the lines of how we should always prefer to assume some degree of ineptness or other issues over malice. The saying isn't phrased as nicely though, it's the "Hanlon's razor." That's not to deny that there aren't many "America 1st" type of people who'd be lamentably easily primed into the most selfish takes possible depending on what their leaders/idols thought was convenient to their own careers, but out of such bad influences even them are probably most often reasonably good people and probably even proud of being of a country that's helping others. Even on personal/individual level it seems that they fare better on things such as charity.

I visited a couple different breeders in 2011 when I was looking to buy pet chinchillas. One of the breeders had an open air enclosure with several prairie dogs. The breeders proceeded to explain to me that they were legally required to disclose that they had been in part responsible for monkey pox spreading several years back. I was only 20 at the time, but looking back, the fact that they were still somehow selling prairie dogs after that fiasco is just wild.

Fax Machines are not HIPAA compliant either. The transmission is not secure and can be easily intercepted. IF the fax is left on the machine, that too can be intercepted by someone that is not the recipient andnot authorized to view the content. If the fax is sent from someplace like FedEx Office (Kinkos) thjen likely the employee at FedEx is not authorized to see the medical informatrion either.

@Karen McCarrell Time is essentially a human construct created to provide a degree of measure to system change. (indeed in physics, the distance between 2 points in a 4 dimensional space has time being imaginary) A cow doesn't check her watch to determine if she needs to be milked. Plants don't check a calendar to see if they should grow. Diseases don't know if it's day or night. Nature responses to thresholds being crossed. The cow's udder is full. It's warm enough and the sun is out. A bacterium or virus only interacts with the chemistry of the cell it's trying to infect. You do bring up an interesting question that was openly discussed in Physics. We can determine an effective model of time by determining that it's proportional to the expansion rate of the Universe. However, if that's 'true' (and I used Truth in the Philosophical sense, since Science worries more about Verifiable Information than Truth), what would happen if the Universe started shrinking (i.e. there was sufficient matter to offset the initial expansion and begin pulling everything back together again)? Would time reverse itself? Would we see broken teacups leap up off the floor and back onto tables intact? Would people sudden reverse from being dead? Would we age in reverse? That's the weirder side of what Physicists think about. So who's to say if your opinion about Time isn't the more accurate one after all?
