For me, Van Persie's goal will remain amazing for a very long time to come. The assist, the timing, Ilker Casillas nailed to the ground, the flying header, simply brilliant
@growl_is_broken he couldnt find a single fault in your grammar so he attacked how you shortened your words. which is actually the thing that doesnt make a single sense. even told you to grow up but it's him that uses the word homosexual as an insult 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@growl_is_broken who says people dont rate commentary? there are dozens of legendary lines of commentary and martin tyler has many of the most iconic, including AGUEROOOOO and when ronaldo played his first game after returning to united. he's a master with words, but if you aren't english then u might not know this so i will give your ignorance the benefit of the doubt, although judging from your original comment u are no fun at parties
@goodest boi That's what I wrote... you just copied exactly what I wrote and put an asterisk at the end...? Where's the mistake? Unless you mean there should be a period at the end, in which case you should understand that that comment is meant to be written in a manner similar to real life speech, where you pause and say something instead of ending your sentence abruptly.
@growl_is_broken and yes, underrated is definitely a word that can be used in this sentence. If something isn’t talked about enough it’s typically seen as underrated or unpopular. Either of them works. Why? If you call something underrated, it means you think the general opinion about it is lower than it should be. Underrated is an adjective, but is also the past tense of the verb underrate. It is somewhat more common to call something underrated than to say that people underrate it, but both are used. Keep crying over a word though.
I'll never forget 'Baggio NO!' since that was the first World Cup that happened in the USA. I was disappointed that the World Cup ended in penalty kicks, to be honest. An event as huge as the World Cup should be settled with both teams on the field, going at it in instant death mode or something. This ain't some local or seasonal game. It's the friggin' World Cup. Literally the Olympics of Soccer. It's kind of a big deal. To have it end on a single missed penalty kick just feels anticlimactic.
You forgot the Red Card for Rudi Völler for being spit on in 1990 against the Netherlands. Great game. I still remember how exciting it was to watch it
I still can't comprehend how the ref didn't give a red card for Nigel de Jong's karate kick at 4:04. I simply as a referee myself do not understand how.
I forgot all about the 3 yellow cards for Suminic against Australia, what a joke, surely you would think the ref would have double checked when all the players surrounded him screaming
Two moments that are definitely missing are the ghost goal from England in the '66 final and the absolutely insane kamikaze attack from German goalkeeper Schumacher on Battiston in the '82 semi final between France and Germany.
Most of these moments in the video are in modern football times(after 1990). But there are still many memorable moments in the World Cup. Such as England controversial goals against W. Germany in World Cup 1966 final, the Cryuff turn(against Sweden in WC 74), amazing goal by Arie Haan(WC 78 against Italy), amazing team work goal by Brazil in WC 70(scored by Carlos Alberto), and still many I guess.
@Antoine Azuelos God, you wasted a lot of time. *I don't think there was a conspiracy to make Ronaldo sick.* He just got sick. The most likely cause of a seizure is stress (suffered them myself; doctor told me; brain scan revealed nothing) and he was under a lot of pressure. I said the media and people with platforms (social media not much of a thing in 98) published conspiracy theories. Again, I don't and didn't agree with them. If you are saying (I skim read your post) that France were just better; it was nothing to do with Ronaldo; whatever. Fine. But the fact remains all the drama and speculation was and is an iconic event. I explicitly mentioned France had the home advantage btw. I think you just "gave up" reading the post. Oh, and outside"bets" I did not mean literally and I don't gamblers. If you do the research, however, you will find Brazil were favourites; possibly even "dark horses" (which would indicate a favourable bet, in fact) and having an "outside" chance of winning. Media in '98 was again far more print so you might have to dig. But again, what does it matter: you're ranting again stuff I didn't argue.
@ScottyMcLagan Ok...🤦♂A last try, but then i give up, cause i don't really enjoy speaking with conspiracy theorists...(So don't bother answering 😉). Before getting to the final, France beat Danemark (2-1, Brazil won 3-2 against them 10 days later), Paraguay (who had the best goalkeeper of the competition and played a very closed game), Italy and Croatia. Apart from Danemark, Brazil had only one high level opponent to win against, who was Netherland, in semifinal, and they won in the penalty kick. Also, are you aware that the competition was happening in France ? So, you would't need to be a genius do guess that it was going to be a very high level game (witch it was, look at the game again if you're not sure). So NO !!! France was absolutely not a "dark horse outside bets" ! And if you think so, PLEASE, for your own good, do never bet in football !
How is Klose surpassing Ronaldo an iconic moment (at 35 seconds)? I'm not a fan boy of Ronaldo, quite the opposite actually, and you can see the goal is perfectly average and the players themselves celebrated as they normally do.
Grosso’s and Del Piero’s goals for Italy against Germany at the end of extra time in the 2006 semifinals should certainly be included here. Both goals were pure class.
@Diego Bazán True. Statistics aside Klose was admirable for sooo many reasons. Kinda sad he's not still around as a Legend on fifa, or something of that nature. 10/10 player in terms of skill, attitude and general nature.
@Cicciput it's something subjetive, like i say common, that is subjetive too. I mean, you put some names like Boksic, Salas, Vieri, etc. For me all those players were way better than Klose, the only point he had in his favor is the Jump and Header. But like i say it's subjetive for me, is not about how many goals he done or Nationality or some bullshit like that, it's about styles and how anybody analize players. I watched tons of them (mostly 80's to 2000's) and for me Klose is top 10 best headres of history not doub (possibly top 5), but as striker is just good, i say overall 6/10.
I remember watching Zidane's headbutt live when I was a kid. I loved him, and always thought that was a shitty way for his career with the French national team to end.
Nope, it's Zidane head butt against Materazzi. It's pretty common to miss a penalty kick during a game, But seeing someone like Zidane acting like that in a Final, is just unbelievable.
Would have liked to see the van Bronckhorst rocket against Uruguay in 2010 here. Not because i am Dutch but it simply was an unexpected long distance hell of a goal.💥💥💥
@Ad Fontes Bergkamp's goal against Argentina was great as well and more important perhaps but i loved the instinctive idea of Giovanni to try it from that distance and angle. There is another goal i loved, think it was Maxi Rodriguez from Argentina, also long distance from the right side. Great one as well.
In the World Cup 1994, Gheorghe Hagi's extraordinary goal against Colombia and his celebration after that goal is absolutely one of the most iconic moments.
@Donar The match against Sweden ended 2-2, including extra time. Sweden had beaten Romania on penalties which was a bit fortuitus. Romania blasted Argentina, which was a strong favorite, 3-2 in the same tournament, so why wouldn't they eliminate Brasil. Give the devil his due! Btw, i'm not from Romania.
@bepis and nuggers One thing is forgiving a second yellow because of a foul, other thing is forgiving a karate kick 💀 De Jokg could broke some bones there
@bepis and nuggers Sure but still there has to be a limit. Like this just was a red card, there is no way how you could put a foul like that in any other light.
but at the same time you don't wanna ruin a final with a red card. With 10 v 11 and Spain's boring passing game, it'd have been a shitty final like barca arsenal in 06.
Wielu brakuje: szejk na boisku, gol z finału 1966 roku, dziwna decyzja sędziego z meczu Argentyna -Francja 1930, mecz RFN-Polska 1974, Węgry-El Salwador 1982, Austria-Szwajcaria 1954, gole Willimowskiego, karny Deyny i pewnie jeszcze kilka
How isn't Tim Cahill's volley against the Netherlands from 2014 in this? The definition of perfect volley and a gorgeous goal. Still to this day everyone only talks about James Rodriguez though
Germany’s deliberate hand ball to clear the ball off the line against the U.S. in 2002 didn’t make this list but it was just as egregious as the Hand of God goal or Frank Lampard’s ‘no goal’ against Germany in 2010. That would be been a PK for the U.S., and a red card for Germany.
Some that are missing: -Lehmann saving penalties vs Argentina by using instructions that were written on a piece of paper that he was hiding in his sock. -Hakan Sukur scoring the fastest goal ever in a World cup vs Korea -Andres Escobar scoring an own goal that eventually lead to his death -Zidane's panenka in a World cup final vs Italy -Maradona scoring and then running towards a camera while on cocaine -Croatia winning 3rd place in their first ever World cup apperance in 1998 -El-Hadary becoming the oldes goalkeeper to save a penalty at the World cup
2014 is probably the best World Cup, Robben’s dive, Van Persie’s Flying Dutchman, James’ left foot volley, the Brazilian Massacre, Gotze’s game winner, Klose cementing himself as the greatest World Cup goal scorer. It had everything. Side Note: It still baffles me that Nigel de Jong caving in Xabi Alonso’s chest only got a yellow…
always fun to see the legendary kick of Nigel de Jong, while never seeing the underrated head kick against Dutch player Demy de Zeeuw, which basically ended his career.
@Paccco I agree re. this video, and I'm not sure about YT, but back when TV was the dominant medium, Tardelli's celebration was always shown. With Baggio, his whole tournament was iconic (in the UK, I once watched a show on which the host was trying to summarise every WC tournament ever played, using just 1 or 2 sentences for each. '94 was, I think "It was far too hot and an Italian had a ponytail"). It's just the penalty miss was the last part of that tournament , and lost the match and the cup. It's just the most emotive, iconic moment of his (or anyone's) '94 tournament, so that gets picked out. I'd imagine there are others though, like you say.
Italy is always snobbed in these compilations or only shown negative moments like that missed penalty by Baggio. Nearly every compilation i watched is like that
Both had very similar finals. However, I think Russia 2018 was the most entertaining of the decade and even of the century. The shot making, the clutch, the goalkeepers. Sure, the ambience of South Africa and Brazil is unmatched.
@Miguel Pinheiro Yes, as a Dutchman born there, the World Cup competition always bring the lure of the big win and so far disappointment. In a few days I will again watch as mijn Nederlandse Elftal play to win the big win. HUP HUP HOLLAND! Sterkte jonges en door drukken!!
Holland is very prominent in WC history. They got to 3 finals (1974, 1978 and 2010) and a few semifinals (at least 1998 and 2014 that I know of). It's a shame they have yet to win the title.
I dont thinks I see football player these days like Pele, maradona, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Beckham, Jaap Stam, Inzaghi, Zidane, Mesi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bierhoof, Batistuta, anymore.. these players are unique, they had their own style of play,, their own trademark,.. to bad for football now,, its all strategy witu no beauty
Brazil 1 - 7 Germany is easily the best score in a national game I've seen because the Brazilians were barely scraping by against lesser teams but the Brazilians were so full of confidence and arrogance. Then they get smashed like this, honestly it was poetic. Bayern Munchen smashing Barcelona 8-2 was my favorite score in a club fixture game ever. Literally everyone knew Bayern would win comfortably but never score 8 goals, and it could have been more. Barcelona were lucky it was only 1 game that year and not 2 legged otherwise we could have seen a historic aggregate score in the Champions League.
What happened with Krul in Costa Rica vs Netherlands game isnt revelant for me. Costa Rica had nothing to lose, and in that moment the team made history.
Not only because it was one of the most beautiful of all time, but also because it leveled the score and utterly changed the dynamic of the game. France never looked back after that.
