Princess Anne made history by becoming the first royal woman to take part in the 'Vigil of the Princes' as she joined her brothers to stand guard over their mother's coffin.

The 72-year-old was dressed in her military uniform for the historic moment at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh beside her three brothers King Charles III, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

Princess Anne deserves this honour more than anyone... She matched her mother's dedication even though she wasn't going to be the one inheriting her role. What a brilliant woman.
@laperkin
This makes me wanna cry. She is her mother's daughter in every way yet so underrated.. God bless the family 🙏🙏

No matter our age, young or old, we all cherish, love, and need our mothers forever. Deepest condolences.

There’s nothing to compare losing your mom. It’s been nearly 10 years since mine passed and I still grieve.

My heart goes out to her, she looks absolutely crushed. My Mother died on 12 September 2019, my Father died 4 months later. You will never be too old to need or want your parent nearby.

I recall Princess Anne as one who was not so often in the gossip circles as were her siblings.

Losing a mother, no matter what your age, is absolutely devastating, particularly I think for a daughter. May they find strength and healing together.

I can’t even imagine standing there or going through the whole procession without crying my eyes out! And yet the four of them stand there showing the respect and love to the Queen and their mother. Princess Anne I have a lot of respect for her not only her serving her country but the devotion to her country and her mother and Queen right to the end! To all the royals who all went through this long procession struggling to hold back their tears actually made me cry! My sympathies for your loss!

During one of the hardest moments of their lives with the whole world watching...I don't know how they are able to stand there without breaking down. This is so sad 😭

I couldn't help but notice how Princess Anne was not only at Balmoral with her mother prior to her passing, but was she was also there afterwards for every stage of the late Queen's journey back to London, at every stop, without fail, ever the dutiful daughter.

There is no greater love than the love of a Mother and Child 💛
@rustynails8756
That has to be one of the most emotional moments of their lives. The Princess Royal has and is a wonderful tribute to her parents. I can only imagine the sorrow they feel.
@mimidavis2686
Princess Anne has earned her right to stand with her brothers at this vigil, more so than Andrew for sure. She has worked tirelessly and diligently to represent her mother, the Queen and the Crown her entire life. I can’t think of anyone who deserves to be acknowledged as one who made history in the Monarchy more than her. I love her style, her wit and her no nonsense way of doing her duties much like her father, Prince Phillip. Rest In Peace Queen Elizabeth and I pray you have been reunited with your true love, never to be apart ever again.💔😢

The Princess Royal's love, dedication and loyalty to her mother until the Queen's final moments ♥️ God bless you, my favorite Princess.

They didn't just lose a queen
@andriess0414
I share her grief, felt like half of my soul flew away when my Mom died almost 5 years ago. To this day I still miss her a lot ...
@nickjordan3269
I think it can sometimes be too easy to forget that these people, regardless of their immense wealth and status, are just people mourning their mother, and a people mourning their Queen. Rest in Peace, Queen Elizabeth II. The people of all the world are touched by your passing.
@emilyan5591
These 4 have shown great love, strength, honor for their mother and Queen. They're amazing and I'm sending live and strength to this family in their time of sorrow
@patrickhardison9669
There is something to always remember. No matter how old, or how sick your mother was it hurts immensely when she passes. It doesn't matter how old you are, it's hard to lose a parent. My deepest sympathies are with the royal family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
