Why do we love The Office? Is it the characters? The jokes? The drama? While those are all major reasons, we want to explore another: how pointless work has overrun the economy.

Man, this video explains so much about the nature of many modern jobs. I think it is something that all of us see but have never quite put it all together.

People that work in offices are ridiculous. I used to work in tech support for field engineers of hospital equipment. Big Post-Modern Company full of stupid motivational speeches and group dynamics as if that would change the fact that we're all surviving while wasting our lives to make somebody else rich. When I got transferred to be a field engineer, the fact I wouldn't have to look in the eye of the same conformist dumbasses everyday improved my life by a ton.

I've noticed BS at work and deliberate inefficiency getting worse and worse in my career. I personally think off shoring is the culprit; in the old days management busy actually managing getting the product and service to the customer, when Off Shoring happened that all went away like the Paper Company in The Office. So suddenly senior managers had very little to do and mostly spend all day micromanaging their departments. This is in turn means the middle management has to manage their managers and make sure their staffs look good when the senior manager wanders in bored looking to make things more "efficient". People think "But Capitalism" well, if the company is showing a profit there is no real pressure to be efficient. Not to mention if a company has off shored decades ago it's unlikely most of the management has the experience to understand whats needed to be efficient. After all, how hard is it to stick a company logo on something someone else made, someone else will transport, someone else will warehouse and that someone else will sell?

At my job we have two buildings, one the company owns which is the main building and one they rent which is a glorified storage closet, so there's quite a bit of BS that goes on. There's a productivity quota that is easily achieved so most employees try not to exceed that, they can make their quota for the hour rather quickly and then goof off until the next hour, or they go slower. I'm the fastest person they have there so I'm regulated to most of the BS tasks otherwise I'll cannibalize all the work that's there or I'll sit at the desk on my phone while I wait for the next BS task to be given to me if I can't find one myself. My supervisor mostly sits at his desk, watching wrestling, waiting for a call or occasionally checking the work logs for tasks that come in throughout the day to give out priority work, which are incredibly small tasks that usually get regulated to me and I've more than likely already done on my own, the manager sits in his office listening to podcasts and web surfing. But I would say that out of everyone that works there, I suffer the most because I'm so bored for the 10 hours I'm there as I'm not really allowed to work until the last few hours of the day and when I do I crush it, I've worked maybe the last 3 hours of a day and have caught up and surpassed the people working for the whole 10 hours. And when there's no work, the will not let anyone go home, they'll just regulate people to housekeeping which no one really does, instead they go hide somewhere until actual work pops up.

Im a engineer, with operational knowledge in welding, machinning, quality assurance, logistics etc, but im constantly out of job, while my wife picks and choses jobs constantly as an administrator. She is usually the most productive employee pushing papers in her office, rarelly making friends in the work because her workpartners are constantly mad at her for beeing too efficient and making them look bad.

I work IT at a call center, and am done with my work in the first hour out of a 10 hour day. My manager is aggressive and micromanages everything, like oh did you see that email, did you reset your password this month, etc... It's like going to prison every day, I'd rather have something to do than stare at my screen 8 hours a day.

I have three different educations because it felt pointless every time I was supposed to start working (graphics designer, police officer and now am a postgrad student in sociology). My idea of where this all comes from is the kind of lies that are hard to unveil due to the nature of them being held by no single individual, only in the collective. It's like Cooleys theory of identity: I am not who I think I am, I am not who you think I am, I am who I think you think I am. It's the same way that Zizek thinks religion functions -- no individual believes in first person, but they believe that other people believes.

I really think the Office is just a mythical existence because all the jobs that available around me retail. I would LOVE to get a job where I sit around do nothing all day and get paid plenty enough to live.

this really explains why friends of mine that work in an office constantly ask about my job (which is being a biologist, I work in Brazil) and i like my job it's gratifying i enjoy it, but you know it's a job. But my friends look at me like i'm indiana jones that just came back from an adventure. When the fires happened here and i was helping people put them out for a month they made a surprise party for me when i went back into the city like wtf.

LOL why quote some guy and his book about BS jobs, when this whole topic has been already most thoroughly discussed by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels (see "Alienation of Labor" and "The Part played by Labour in the Transition from Ape to Man")

A_L_I_E_N_A_T_I_O_N 1. Workers are alienated from other human beings. In a capitalist economy, workers must compete with each other for jobs and raises. But just as competition between businesses brings down the price of commodities, competition between workers brings down wages. And so it is not the proletariat who benefits from this competition, but capitalists. This is not only materially damaging to workers, it estranges them from each other. Humans are free beings and are able to not only transform the world themselves, but to cooperate in order to transform the world in more sophisticated and helpful ways. As such, they should see each other as allies, especially in the face of a capitalist class who seeks to undermine worker solidarity for its own benefit. But under capitalism workers see each other as opposing competition. 2. Workers are alienated from the products of their labor. Capitalists need not do any labor themselves - simply by owning the means of production, they control the profit of the firm they own, and are enriched by it. But they can only make profit by selling commodities, which are entirely produced by workers.8 Thus, the products of the worker’s labor strengthen the capitalists, whose interests are opposed to that of the proletariat. Workers do this as laborers, but also as consumers: Whenever laborers buy commodities from capitalists, that also strengthens the position of the capitalists. This again stands in opposition to the workers’ species-being. Humans produce in response to our needs; but for the proletariat at least, strengthening the capitalist class is surely not one of those needs. 3. Workers are alienated from the act of labor. Because capitalists own the firms that employ workers, it is they, not the workers, who decide what commodities are made, how they are made, and in what working conditions they are made. As a result, work is often dreary, repetitive, and even dangerous. Such work may be suitable for machines, or beings without the ability to consciously and freely decide how they want to work, but it is not suitable for human beings. Enduring this for an extended period of time means that one can only look for fulfillment outside of one’s work; while “the activity of working, which is potentially the source of human self-definition and human freedom, is … degraded to a necessity for staying alive.”

I worked in technical writing for several years. Most miserable, soul-sucking job I've had. The company was paid millions to produce a document a month. They gave me the work, said it should take me a month. Trying to be helpful, I finished it in two weeks. I was quietly pulled aside and reprimanded for finishing it too quickly and efficiently. "Now what are you going to do for the rest of the month? We'll have to come up with something. Just... try to be busy for now." That encapsulated my experience there :/

I've only been working for about two years now, and I've had two jobs. The first one was like 50% bullshit, and the current one is an actual proper job. You can definitely tell the difference right away. People at the first job seriously got mad at you if you worked to fast, I would constantly run out of things to do but I wasn't allowed to leave even if it was 30min to the end of the workday, the managers were perpetually absent, we had tons of idiotic corporate meetings about things that had nothing to do with our jobs. And most of all I constantly found myself filling my time with distractions and totally getting away with it. At my new job if you work efficiently you get praised by the higher ups, there's little down time, and when you legitimately run out of things to do you can simply leave. It's actually quite motivating.

16:30 the reason they exist is because if they didn't, then this whole universal basic income thing would have to not only be past the mental masturbation phase, but would have had to be in full effect much like laws of man and nature are in full effect! That and capitalism would end! everything costs 1 cent to buy, yet no one can afford it because no one has any jobs, thank you automation!

Dude, do you want to watch someone do taxes for a show? It's a show. It's meant to be entertaining, not realistic. I like all your other stuff but this was just kinda stupid, it's a show? It doesn't matter whether they do "real" work or not because it's a show. Yet you called Dwight's beet farm "real work" because why? You never see him harvesting beets and farming, planting seeds for an extended period of time for the whole episode so what's the difference of seeing occasional sales call and typing in the background, in fact by your logic Dunder does more "real work" than Dwight's farm because you actually SEE it. :/

Which is very fulfilling because you see people smile all the time at your work. I'm in the works of finally leaving my BS job to nothing but fulfilling career work. One of the reasons why I stopped watching the office is because it was kind of too relatable and depressing.
