When they released the Rubik’s cube back in the 80s there was a professor in San Francisco I think who literally without ever seeing one before, took it out of the box and solved it in 30 minutes. No guides existed back then, some peoples brains are literally just build different and see specific scenarios so much more clearly than the average or even the exceptional person can.
@im gauge I know that's how it sounds, but commutators are actually quite intuitive without seeing any mathematical description. One common example is the task rearranging a line of randomly sorted playing cards, and trying to rearrange them in order by only swapping two at a time. For a lot of people, the solution to this becomes quite obvious quite quickly. The logical solution reveals the hidden secret of commutators - performing two separate swaps , before undoing the two swaps and noting that 3 cards have been cycled through their positions. The exact same logic can be applied to a Rubik's cube by doing certain sequences of moves and then doing them in reverse, for example A B A' B' where ' denotes the inverse of sequences A and B. It's not exactly trivial to apply this to a cube without external help, but it's nowhere near as complicated as you might think. People with backgrounds in mathematics do tend to have a better intuition for this sort of thing, but it's not exclusive to that group, nor is it indicative of a genius intellect. It's pretty damn impressive for sure. There are lots of kids under 10 out there who learned commutators in a day and have used that to solve a cube totally independent of any methods they already knew. Gaining an intuition for how how the puzzle pieces move is the bulk of the cube's difficulty, which just comes with practice and actively paying attention to what happens as you turn it - which pieces are affected, and how are they affected?
@Scott Robinson to be fair, you’re saying “its fairly intuitive if you’re quite familiar with the application of this unintuitive obscure section of math.” maybe i have a low bar for what a genius is but i’d say that fits my standards edit: this was in response to your first comment i believe, feel free to ignore
My family has had this puzzle for years. When I was a kid I would love playing with it trying to get the big square out without any luck. My parents and grandparents couldn't figure it out either. I never would have imagined that 10-15 years later I'd see the solution to this puzzle by this person on ELvids. It's just crazy to me.
Ok this looks fairly simple, grouping the blues into pairs of 2 allows you to use them to sort of "push" the red in certain directions, while pushing the yellows to the opposite edges. You'll notice the 2 blues are always on the opposite side of the direction he is going to move the red.

@British Wrath Only for the Monkey Madness quest, players have the option to 'bypass' the puzzle by paying Glough, in his words, a "small fee" of 200,000 coins (200K).
@Mr. CEO if you use common sense, it's a museum of illusions. The ring exhibit behind the main guy has another peg that when you move the rings to the other, it distorts and looks irregular to how you put it on. Maybe stop criticizing people who have actually been to this museum for misinterpreting your assumptions with no basis...
@Amy Bishop if you are smart enough to know that this is some museum, great. All i have to say is when you go there next, amy, make sure they give you your treat for putting the loops on the pole in the correct order😆😆
When you played an old Japanese game that came out on ps2 and had to solve a puzzle like this or the mc was gonna drown. Fun times fun times, pure anxiety 🙃.
